History

Founded in 1992

The History of Whiffle Tree Mercantile

Whiffle Tree Mercantile has been a destination for treasure hunters, collectors, and curious shoppers in downtown Monticello, Iowa, for decades. Originally founded in 1992 as Whiffle Tree Antique Mall by LeeRoy and Jan Mootz, the store quickly earned a reputation for offering unique antiques, collectibles, and one-of-a-kind finds. Their vision of bringing together multiple vendors under one roof created a shopping experience unlike any other in the area and established Whiffle Tree as a beloved local tradition.

In October 2020, Bobby and Heidi Krum purchased the building, the business, and its inventory with a vision of preserving its rich history while creating something new for future generations. After months of remodeling, reorganizing, and reimagining the space, the store reopened as Whiffle Tree Mercantile—a modern take on the classic general store.

Today, Whiffle Tree Mercantile is home to more than 30 local vendors spread across two floors and nearly 10,000 square feet of shopping. Visitors will find antiques, vintage décor, collectibles, toys, candy, locally made products, gifts, home décor, books, handmade creations, and so much more. Every visit offers something different as vendors are constantly bringing in fresh inventory.

The Mercantile has become known for blending nostalgia with today's trends. Alongside vintage treasures, shoppers can discover popular TikTok finds, fresh deliveries from Howard Street Bakery, specialty foods, electronics, novelty gifts, and unique items that appeal to every generation. It has truly become a place where grandparents, parents, and kids can all find something to enjoy.

More than just a retail store, Whiffle Tree Mercantile is a community gathering place. Bobby and Heidi are passionate about supporting local entrepreneurs, helping small businesses grow, and creating a welcoming destination for both residents and visitors exploring Jones County. The store proudly participates in community events, downtown celebrations, and charitable efforts while continually investing in Monticello's historic downtown.

Although the name has evolved from Whiffle Tree Antique Mall to Whiffle Tree Mercantile, its heart remains the same—a place built on friendship, community, and the thrill of discovering something special. The legacy started by LeeRoy and Jan continues to live on through every vendor, every customer, and every treasure that finds a new home.

From its beginnings in 1992 to today, Whiffle Tree Mercantile continues to honor its past while embracing the future, ensuring that each person who walks through the doors experiences the warmth, charm, and excitement that have made it a Monticello tradition for generations.
